To start off this blog, I am going to begin with photos I have taken in previous trips to Mamelodi while working on my master’s thesis at UNC. This photo is from one of the stories called “Facing The Future.” Vincent Nyathi, Pastor of Powerhouse Church, introduced me to these children, about 15 in all, who live together in a house with no parents, just an uncle who works part time. I was not able to do a traditional documentary style story because they would not let me blend into their lives and start acting natural. But nevertheless, their beautiful faces and curious questions captured me, and making the photos seemed inevitable.

These children also represent for me the future of South Africa which is sometimes hopeful and sometimes very bleak. I try not to answer the question but let the viewer think about it.
